About Certus LD
Headquartered near Baltimore, Maryland, Certus LD has it's roots in consumer advocacy. Founded by W. Craig Kenney and Dave Mortensen, the company has seen the financial crisis in this country from a perspective few have had.

The realization that litigation is almost always the worst and most expensive outcome of any consumer issue led to the idea for the company's name: Certus Litigo Declino - Latin for "settled without litigation."

Our philosophy has been developed with an eye on Abraham Maslow's profound statement about seeing every problem as a nail (see above). For too long, the ultimate solution to issues that could have been prevented has been to engage the legal profession - the hammer - when other tools could have been used if they had been available.

Over time we have come full circle on our original concept: The best solution is prevention and our latest development is the culmination of years of dealing with 'at-risk' borrowers.

The timeline:
2004:  Just over three years after the beginning of his protracted battle with a mortgage servicer and two years acting as a third-party intervenor on behalf of borrowers, W. Craig Kenney recruits Dave Mortensen to fully develop a series of business plans to address mortgage servicing issues proactively across the entire servicing market.
May, 24-26, 2004:  Certus LD is publicly launched and sponsors ACI post-Fairbanks mortgage servicing legal issues conference in Washington D.C.  VitalSigns, Borrowerhelp.com, and Real Life, Real Money projects and services are announced and introduced.
May 30, 2004:  Kenney is critically injured in a construction accident at his home.
December, 2004:  Because of the challenges facing Kenney as a result of his injuries and the changes seen coming in the industry, Certus LD morphs into a publishing company (Certus LD LLC) as opposed to an active monitoring and intervention services provider. An 18-month project to produce “The Mortgage Survival Kit” is green-lighted.
September, 2005:  Dave Mortensen completes first proposed draft.
January, 2006: The Mortgage Survival Kit is published in hardcopy and for electronic delivery.
July, 2008:  The BorrowerHelp blog is launched and development of the Financial Compass begins.
